Meet Katie and Nevin, they are both Thompson Rivers University students in the Tourism Management Degree program. Like most students they are both looking forward to life after graduation. Unlike most students, instead of seeking work after school, they are creating their own!
Katie and Nevin were both participants in Startup Weekend Kamloops in October of 2013 where along with their team they created Visitour* – an interactive approach to travelling. While they didn’t place in the top 3 at Startup Weekend, once the competition was over the Visitour team took a look at what they had created and realized they could make it into a real product!
Since completing Startup Weekend Katie and Nevin have been working hard to get Visitour up and running. They have been accepted into the British Columbia Innovation Council’s (BCIC) Venture Acceleration Program (VAP) and are working out of an office at Kamloops Innovation. The VAP gives them access to knowledgeable mentors and their networks, as well as ongoing coaching to get their venture investment ready. This program is also helping Katie and Nevin develop their entrepreneurial skills, and is a great lead off to apply what they learned during their time at Thompson Rivers University.
The sky is the limit for entrepreneurs in B.C. with great support coming out of local accelerators and BCIC.
