Kamloops Selected to Host the 2017 BC Regional Startup Canada Awards!

KAMLOOPS – March 17, 2017 – Kamloops Innovation has partnered with Startup Canada to bring the 2017 BC Regional Startup Canada Awards to Kamloops this September, one of a series of hallmark events across Canada celebrating outstanding achievement in Canada’s entrepreneurship and innovation community.

As the only regional awards ceremony in BC and Alberta, Kamloops could see nominees in 17 categories from across Western Canada.

“This is a direct result of Kamloops Innovation’s dedication to raising the profile of our rapidly growing technology sector,” says Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar. “We’re thrilled to host Startup Canada and all the award recipients in Kamloops this fall.”

Kamloops is no stranger to Startup Canada. Thanks to a funding partnership with the City of Kamloops, Kamloops Innovation attended and sponsored part of a similar Startup Canada event in Vancouver last October. A delegation, including Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar and several local business people, attended the awards to showcase Kamloops as a hub of entrepreneurship.

Kamloops has also generated several past recipients of Startup Canada Awards:

  • Robert Atwood, CEO of Hummingbird Drones – Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2015
  • Kamloops Innovation – Entrepreneur Support 2015
  • iTel Networks – High Growth Entrepreneurship 2016, Regionally and Nationally
  • John Zubak, Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Kamloops Innovation – Adam Chowaniec Lifetime Achievement Award 2016

Startup Canada opened nominations and invites individuals, businesses and organizations to apply for 17 awards, including the Indigenous Entrepreneur Award, Innovation Award and the High-Growth Award. To celebrate Canada’s 150-year anniversary, a new award will commemorate an iconic Canadian business that has propelled Canada’s brand on the global stage through its determination and leadership.

Nomination deadline for the 2017 Startup Canada Awards is June 16, 2017 at 11:59 pm ET. The complete list of awards and criteria can be found at, along with nomination forms.
