Startup Basics: Positioning Your Startup

It’s time to start focusing on what exactly it is your business does, who your customers are, and how you differentiate from your competitors. In this workshop, you will be guided through writing your businesses’ positioning statement and learning how to determine what your minimal viable product is.

In this workshop we will cover:

  • 6 Steps to Building a successful positioning statement including identifying your competitors and target market
  • Finding and owning your companies value
  • Identifying differentiators from your competitors
  • Minimal Viable Product – The importance of avoiding feature creep

About Startup Basics

We know that entrepreneurship can often seem daunting or be intimidating to those first starting out. The Kamloops Innovation Startup Basics Series helps minimize this fear by providing entrepreneurs and startup-curious with the tools they need to get started. Through the Startup Basics Series, Kamloops Innovation provides mentorship, resources, and tools to help entrepreneurs structure and curate their ideas while in the first stages of their startup. Entrepreneurs who participate in the Startup Basics Series often go on to graduate into our more extensive programs like the Market Validation Training and Venture Acceleration Program, and onto starting their own companies creating significant benefits for the community.

 

The Startup Basics Series is a relaxed classroom style program split into distinct topics that bring entrepreneurs and startup-curious through the basics of forming a business plan and documenting their ideas. Sessions are presented by Kamloops Innovation staff, EIR, mentors, partners, and alumni. Each session is designed to educate on the fundamentals needed to transform an idea into a startup; passion into a paycheck.

Junior Dragons Den Live Show

Junior Dragons Den Live Show @ House Of Learning - HOL190 | Kamloops | British Columbia | Canada

Junior Dragons Den is an entrepreneurship competition and call to action for students from Grades 4 to University/College/ Trades school level to create their own summer job/ business, or to expand an existing one. Students are required to submit a business concept paper for their business idea, or their business improvement idea (in the case of an existing business). The concept paper speaks to the: who, what, where, when, how, why and start-up costs associated with the business concept, finishing off with why the applicant should be chosen to compete in Junior Dragons Den.

Watch live while the top students present their business ideas, small enterprises, or inventions to a panel of judges with important connections and years of experience.

Admission is free.

Startup Basics: Business Building

Business Building

Get a complete picture of your company broken into 9 easy-to-consume, highly vital elements of your business plan. Work with a mentor to build out your business’ Business Model Canvas and deep dive into the key elements that make a startup successful.

 

In this workshop we will cover:

  • The 9 elements of the Business Model Canvas
  • How to identify your target audience and determine your company’s value
  • Learn from real-life examples and dissect existing successful business’ models

Startup Coffee | Caffeine & Entrepreneurial Conversations

Discuss new business ideas with experienced founders and mentors at Startup Coffee – a monthly meeting of students, entrepreneurs, and community members. Get feedback on the business idea you’ve been thinking about, ask questions, meet other student entrepreneurs, and get connected.

You don’t need an idea to participate. Hear what others are working on and how you can get involved in the entrepreneurial community on campus.

This month we are headed to Common Grounds in the Campus Activity Center! Look for the Startup Coffee banner.

RSVP and we will buy you your first cup of joe!

The Generator supports students, faculty, alumni, and staff with mentorship, workspace, and events. Located in the basement of the House of Learning Building – just take the elevators down to the basement!
